What is Venturers?
Venturers is the next section after Scouts. It is open to teenagers between the ages of 14 to 18. This section of scouting combines a prestigious award scheme with heaps of fun activities.
The 15th Essendon Venturer Unit usually meets on a Friday night between 7.00pm and 9.00pm. The location may vary but meetings usually take place at the 15th Essendon Sea Scout Hall located at Fairbairn Park, Woods Street, Ascot Vale, 3032 (next to the Essendon Canoe Club).
What does the Unit do?
The programme for the Unit varies from week to week. Past activities have included indoor rock climbing, go-karting, dinner and a movie, x-box night and cooking nights. The Unit also meets for Unit Council and for District Venturer Council, which is held on the 3rd Wednesday of every month.
As well as weekly meetings the Unit also goes on hikes and camping trips on the weekends. Past trips have included outdoor rock climbing, skiing and white water canoeing. We also take part in various courses held on weekends which contribute towards the Queen’s Scout Award.
Annual Events
Anything Goes (AG) – a camp held near the start of each year. An action packed weekend of activities such as 4WD, scuba diving, caving and socialising (of course!!!).
Hoadley Hide – a competition hike held over Easter each year. It is probably the highlight of the Venturer calendar as far as hikes go. Over 600 venturers and guides turn up each year for four days of fun and adventure. For more information on the Hoadley Hide visit: http://www.hoadleyhide.com/
I’Glute – a camp held in the middle of the year. It is a fantastic weekend held at Mt. Sterling. On I’Glute you will get the opportunity to ski, make and sleep in igloos, socialise with other venturers and even get into a few snowball fights!!!
BARCOM – “Best Australian Rafting Centre on Murray.” It is an eight day adventure camp of rafting on the Murray River. There are two trips held around September and October each year.
Victorian Gathering (VG) – a weekend long camp held at the end of each year. It is basically an end of year party for Victorian Venturers and Guides. VG is a great opportunity to meet new people, chill out and spend time with your unit.
